She abhorred getting her hands dirty and OMG – was afraid of spiders. But, her son was coming home from college and she wanted to clean up the southwest corner of the front yard. Before she knew it, she yanked out the bird of paradise while cursing John, her law school professor hubby. As if that wasn’t enough, she dug up the unkempt 20-year old junipers and hedges – all the while hubby said she couldn’t do it. Oh boy, then, she removed half the grass. Ah — a blank canvas. She made curves! Then she went to the back and removed all of the grass, one square foot at a time, as hubby cried. She bordered the yard with fruit trees, shrubs, palms, succulents and evergreens. She even added an island for the little guys. Then, oh no! She took a 16-lb. sledgehammer and attacked the ugly concrete patio. But it’s ok because she incorporated the chunks, one at a time, into the border garden.
Finally, she hugged the planted garden area with a neighbor’s unused old bricks; adding a vegetable garden, a sandbox, paths and tons of river rocks. Oh, and she discovered gloves and now lets the spiders be.
